Instructions to Authors

      The Journal will accept original and innovative submissions in Japanese or English from members of the Society of Practical Otolaryngology, on the understanding that the work is unpublished and is not being considered for publication elsewhere.

[Submission of Manuscripts]

  1. Submit three copies of the manuscript (1 original and 2 photocopies of each component of the manuscript). Copies of photographs should be the same quality as the originals.Or, send a digital copy of the manuscript burned to a CD-ROM. We also accept online submissions through website(https://www.editorialmanager.com/jibirin/). For information on how to use, refer to the system documentation ( Japanese only).

  2. Manuscripts should be composed on a word processor, printed on only one side of a sheet paper, with wide margins, double spacing and page numbers(bottom center position) throughout.

  3. Manuscripts should in general be divided into the following components: title, authors’ names and affiliations, abstract, keywords, text, references, tables, figure legends and figures.

  4. All articles should be 15 printed journal pages or less.(As for Short communication should be 2 printed journal pages or less and approximately 1200 words in length.)

  5. Indicate the type of manuscript in the title page, choosing from Original articles, Review articles and Short communication.

  6. Refrain from using concrete date to avoid the identification of patients. Instead, use the expression like “Three days after the presentation,...”, etc.

 [Title page]

 The title page should include the following:

  1. A concise but informative article title.

  2. An abbreviated form of the title to be used as a running head.

  3. All of the author's full names and affiliations.

  4. Corresponding author’s name, full address, telephone and fax numbers, and E-mail address.

  5. A brief running head.

 [Abstract]

  1. The abstract should be prepared on a separate page, and must not exceed 300 words in length.(As for Short communication must not exceed 120 words in length)

  2. 3-5 keywords should be supplied.(As for Short communication,3 key words should be supplied)  

  3. The purpose of the investigation should be stated, followed by a description of the study design or experimental procedure, main findings or major contributions, and finally the specific conclusion or recommendations.

  4. Sufficient information should be included for the abstract to be easily understood without reference to the text, and any new and important aspects of the study should be emphasized.

 [Text]

   Text is to be divided into sections with the following headings consecutively in principle: Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion and Acknowledgement( if needed).Number pages consecutively in the bottom center of each page,beginning with the first page of the main text as page 1.

 [References]

References should be placed and numbered in the order of appearance in the text. Each number should be positioned after the last relevant word with a right parenthesis mark, and all references should be listed at the end of the text. Abbreviations for the Journals cited should conform to the Index Medicus. For an article in a non-English language, the title should be translated into English and enclosed in brackets, and the original language indicated in parentheses. List all authors when there are three or fewer. When there are four or more, list the first three, followed by “et al.”. The following are sample references.

Article:          Ito J, Taura A, Fujita S, et al. : Use of rotation flap in the treatment of cutaneous ulceration after cochlear implantation. Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg 121 : 830-832, 1999．

Book:             Harrison RV : The physiology of the cochlear nerve. Physiology of the Ear (ed by Jahn AF and Satos-Sacchi J). pp 359-384, Raven Press, New York, 1988．

  [Figures and Tables]

  1. Figures, photographs and tables should be clear.

  2. Figures, prepared by the author(s) will be used in the printed version of the journal. Cite each figure in the text and mark in the right margin of the text page.

  3. Photographs (13×9cm) will be published in monochrome in principl. Color photographs can be accepted if the author(s) is willing to pay the extra cost of their publication.

  4. Figures and tables should be numbered consecutively.

  5. Figure titles and legends should also be typed consecutively on a separate sheet.

  6. The authors’ names, and “top” should be indicated on the back of each figure and table.

  7. Photos of patients should be eye-covered and consent must be obtained from the patients or their guardian(s).

  8. All figures and tables should be prepared on A4-size white paper.

  9. If a figure has already been published, it is the author’s responsibility to obtain written permission to reproduce or modify from the copyright holder, and acknowledge the original source in the legend.

  10. As for Short communication should be composed of 2 sheets or less of figures or tables. 

  [Format of a digital copy of the manuscript]  

    1.　The name of authors and the title of the manuscript should be written on CD. The name of authors, the title of the manuscript, 
          and the operating system (Windows / Macintosh) and software used should be written on a separate sheet.
    2.　Title page, Abstract, Main Text, Figure Legend, and References should be saved on a separate file.
    3.　Each table and figure should be saved on a separate file, numbered consecutively.
    4.　Prepare texts and tables in Microsoft Word. Tables in Microsoft Excel can be accepted. Figures may be submitted  in 
          EPS, TIFF,  or Microsoft Power Point. (Required resolution: 1200 dpi for line art, 350 dpi for photographs)                     

 [Ethical standards]

 Human subject experiments and the use of human materials must be in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki, and specify the manner in which informed consent was obtained from all human subjects. Authors must also state that the protocol of the investigation has been approved by the institutional review board. For experimental investigations in animals, specify that the appropriate institutional review board approved the project.

[Clinical Data]  

 Randomized controlled study reports: Protocols (patient groups, intervention or drug exposure, outcome and basis of statistical measurement), layouts of treatment (methods used for randomization, how randomized allocations were generated) and methods of blinding (masking) should be submitted.

 [Statistical Methods]  

 Eligibility criteria for participants, details of randomization, methods and the success of blinding, adverse events, sample size and reports of dropouts must be submitted so that other researchers can confirm the results.

 

 [Proofs and Reprint]

 The main author will be given an opportunity to proofread the galley of an accepted manuscript. Major changes are not permitted at this time.
Thirty reprints of each article will be supplied free of charge. An order form, showing the cost of reprints, will be sent to the author with the galley proofs. The form should be completed and returned to the editorial office with the proofs.

[Copyright]

 The copyrights of all manuscripts published in the Practica Oto-Rhino-Layngologica belong to the Society of Practical Otolaryngology. A copyright transfer transmittal form will be sent to the corresponding author. This form must be signed and dated by first author of the manuscript before the article is published. 

[Duplicate Publication]

 The manuscript must be prepared in accordance with the “Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals”. Publication in different language or in different countries are justified provided that the following conditions are met:
1.    The authors have received approval from the editors of both journals.
2.    The second paper is intended for a different group of readers.
3.    The authors should clearly state in the second article that it has already been published in another journal.

[Disclosure on the website]

 Authors must accept that all manuscripts published in the Practica-Oto-Rhino-Laryngologica are accessible on the web-site below.

[Conflicts of interest]

 Authors are required to disclose all financial and personal relationships that might influence their work, and all authors should disclose any possible conflicts of interest, in their title page.

[Page charge]

 Authors are responsible for;

  1. Printing costs, up to 4 pages 11,000 yen, and add to 14,000 yen per page.

  2. Articles submitted for rapid publication will be charged at the full cost plus a 20% surcharge

  3. Actual fees for printing figures, color figures, tables, and traces etc.

  4. Reprint costs (more than 30)
