Okyo Maruyama
He was born in the Anou Village of Tanba, located in the suburbs of present day Kameoka City of Kyoto, in 1733.
His first name was Iwajiro, his known name was Mondo and his azana name (the name used when you reach adulthood) was Chusen. He was also know by the artist names Issho,Kaun, or Senrei.
He studied under Ishida Yuutei of Kano-ha, who was influenced by Tsuruzawa-ha. Afterwards,
he concentrated on sketching nature and duplicated sketches of Chinese
historic sites.
He especially loved drawings of flowers, birds and minute beautiful woman by Cho Shou and Sen Sunkyo.
In addition, he also established his own
new style of a drawing, known as Shaseiga (sketch picture),
after studying the drawings of Korin and mastering how to make copperplate pictures,
which was introduced from the Western World during his time.
His new style of drawing was enjoyed by people from all walks of life
and eventually was considered an authority figure in the world of art.
He was admired and respected as the founder of Enzan-ha. He passed away
on July 17, 1795.
His sketch of the four seasons can still be
seen in the alcove door case of the Imperial Temple Building in Sanjichion-ji Temple.
