Hello.

I won't offer an opinon about whether CBS is right or wrong, but I'll try to explain why CBS broadcast some information that Ms. XXX found disturbing.

CBS sometimes broadcasts quaint and interesting information during a sports broadcast. Some examples come to mind. First, there was a story about how Jesse Owens, an African-American athlete, overcame the hostile racist environment of his era to excel in sports. CBS (or was "it" ABC?) mentioned many racist aspects of American society during that era.

As another example, many years ago, there was an Olympic contest where a Korean runner during the last moments of the race ran past the Japanese runner to win the gold medal. The Japanese runner won the silver medal. A few American sports commentators reviewed pre-1945 history where a Korean runner also won the gold but won it for Japan as Korea was under occupation at the time.

This approach may differ from that in Japan. Perhaps, mentioning unpleasant things is not the accepted approach during the broadcast of sports in Japan.

The American and Japanese way of approaching the truth and many other things may be different. The Americans tend to be forthright and direct about the ugly truth overseas--and at home.
