Fujinomori Shrine

The inhabitants at the foothills of the Fushimiinari mountain go to the Fujinomori Shrine, which is near the Sumizome station of the Keihan Line and is the 3rd station away from Fushimiinari. This is rather odd as there is a nearby Fushimiinari Shrine and none of them are its parishioner.

The following interesting legend tells us how this happened.
Once upon a time, the Fujinomori Shrine owned this area; while the Fushimiinari Shrine owned only area at the top of the mountain of Inariyama (Inari mountain). One day, the Fushimiinari Shrine proposed to the Fujinomori Shrine to lease from them storage space for straw. The Fujinomori Shrine agreed to this request because the storage space of straw was thought to be limited. But the Fushimiinari Shrine required more space as they collected more bundles of straw, ending up expelling the parishioners of the Fujinomori Shrine from this area.

Today, as the palanquin of the Fujinomori Shrine enters the precinct of the Fushimiinari Shrine during the Fujinomori Festival, the believers of the Fujinomori Shrine called out with a loud voice as in the olden time repeatedly "Return the land of the Fujinomori Shrine".
This story may not be true according to the old literature. However, the way it explains the peculiar situation the Fujinomori Shrine parishioners were and are in is quite interesting.

Fujimori festival is famous for the Kakeuma Shinji (Horse riding ritual). Various traditional horseback riding techniques are demonstrated.
