A Doll of Dog along Sirakawa street
(May 15, 1997)

In front of the electrical store along Shirakawa street in Sakyo-ku, there is a big doll of the dog, designed for an advertisement of Victor.
His pose indicates a wondering of a dog who hears his master's voices from a record player. But there is no record player in front of him. I think this is the reason why he looks mournfully.
Including its pedestal, the doll is almost a meter tall. It is made so realistic that really dogs often pick a fight with it.
(Near from Bus stops of Kinrin-Shako-mae of Kyoto City Bus.
There are also Philosophers' lane, Kinkai-Komyo-ji Temple, Sinnyo-do Temple near the doll of dog.)

This is the doll.

Mystery

Doll of Dog requites her favor

In these 20 years, it's been a daily routine of Kiyo Taniguchi (73 years old. A fictitious name.) to take a walk along Sirakawa street, and when she came to in front of the doll Dog of Victor, to say hello to the doll dog.
She sometimes wiped the dust away from the doll dog, and even named it 'Pochi' at her discretion.

One day, on her way to shopping, she was robbed her purse and a bag way by two monkey-like high-school students who were very rich already.
The two laughed scornfully at Kiyo when they saw her squatting down and grieving, but when they came to in front of the doll dog Pochi, it was their turn to squatting down for fear. Pochi suddenly stood up in a rage, and at the two thieves,
'Miaow!'
barked like a cat!
The two were very much surprised and frightened, and was petrified with terror to lose consciousness.

Soon after, tourists who had watched the robbery captured the two and took the purse and the bag back for Kiyo.

What a strong sense of duty the doll dog had!
