JOYA-NO-KANE,
The Bell Ringing Out The Old Year and 108 Worldly Desires

(December 25, 1997)

At the night of New Year's Eve, around 0 AM of New Year's Day.
JOYA-NO-KANEs, the Bells that ring out the old year and 108 worldly desires, ring 108 times through the city of Kyoto.

It sounds 'Gwoooooooon...'
Yes, it's very long and slow ringing.

JOYA-NO-KANE is a traditional event of Japanese Buddhism. There are lots of Buddhist Temples in Kyoto and many JOYA-NO-KANEs can be heard.

JOYA-NO-KANE aims at extinguishing 108 worldly desires of human, and last JOYA-NO-KANE extinguished one man who had been notorious as a man of worldly desires.
His name was Jokuro Kujo (A fictitious name. 23 years old).
When he was drinking at a bar in Gion and heard the last ringing of JOYA-NO-KANE, his body disappeared into an air.

The phenomenon was recorded on video tape, but the tape was robbed by mysterious persons dressed in black.

I hope you and I won't be extinguished by JOYA-NO-KANE like Jokuro Kujo.
