The Owner of Kuri-kinton Shop
(December 24, 1998)

In the Tokugawa periodo, there was a famous shop of Kuri-kinton near Shijo-Karasuma of Kyoto.
Kuri-kinton is a Japanese traditional confectionary of a mashed sweet potatoes with sweetened chestnuts. Kuri-kintons of the shop were so delicious that the shop was known all over Japan, China, Korea, and even known in Holland, the only European country that had a chance to trade with Japan then.

In one year, inappropriate behaviors of the owner of the Kuri-kinton shop became to be known through Japan and Eastern Asia and Europe. He had an inappropriate relationship with a young woman who was warking at the shop.

'What a shame!'
The family of the Kuri-kinton shop planned to gather to discuss what they should do to the inappropriate owner of the Kuri-kinton shop.

The owner of the Kuri-kinton shop was so afraid to be ousted that he picked a quarrel with an owner of Cha-dango shop who had been in rivalry with the family of the Kuri-kinton. Cha-dango is a Japanese traditional dumpling with green tea flavour.
The owner of the Kuri-kinton shop killed a nephew of the owner of Cha-dango shop and thought that 'this brave attitude' would be praised by the family and they would stop ousting him.

But, all the family of the Kuri-kinton shop blamed him,
'What a fool man you are!'
and he was ousted.
