Daitokuji is a Zen temple in northern Kyoto City.
It started in 1319 and has had a lot of historic stories.
For example, after being destroyed by fire in the War of Onin (1467),
Ikkyuu-san who is famous as a priest with a quick wit revived it and lived there.
In 1591, Sen-no-Rikyuu, the great master of the tea ceremony, was forced to hara-kiri
by a governor Toyotomi Hideyoshi
who thought that a statue of Rikyuu placed in Daitokuji is a defiance to his authority.
A tomb of Ishida Mitsunari,
a famous commander who was killed by Tokugawa Iyeyasu in 1600, is in Daitokuji.
How about walking around its vast and silent site?
You will find a very tall Chinese juniper that is more than 300 years old
in the south of Butsu-den.
This Chinese juniper looks very mysterious, wise, and friendly.
It's perhaps this kind of trees that we meet in a forest of fairy's world.
'Hi, TREE! Let's sing a theme song of TV animation Ikkyuu-san with me!'
To say that, I recommend you to practice singing a song of "Ikkyuu-san"
before you visit Daitokuji-temple.
