Fearful SETSUBUN
(January 29, 1998)

Though it's not fixed which day is SETSUBUN, February 2 or 3 is a Day of SETSUBUN every year.
SETSUBUN is a day when people drive demons away from their houses and invite Gods of Fortune into their houses.
For this purpose, on a Day of SETSUBUN, people through beans out of their house shouting 'ONI wa SOTO! (It means Go Out, Demons!)' and into their house shouting 'FUKU wa UCHI! (It means Come In, Gods of Fortune!)

As demons are driven out of houses where they were, there are lots of demons outdoors after SETSUBUN. They are willing to harm someone and want their poor victims. We should be much more careful when we are out.

On the following day of SETSUBUN of last year.
Kigai Fukuuchi (A fictitious name. 36 years old. A resident of Nakagyo Ward.) tumbled down stepping on beans left since SETSUBUN on his way to work, and broke his coccyx. How unlucky!
Sachiko Kigai (A fictitious name. 22 years old. A resident of Kamigyo Ward.) was hit by a bicycle of a small boy when she was standing on a sidewalk being stunned at her boyfriend's words, 'So long forever.' How poor!
Nashiko Zuisho (A fictitious name. 16 years old. A resident of Kita Ward.) was infected with a venereal disease when she became a prostitute to buy a luxurious jewel. Who can feel sympathy for her?

As above, throwing beans in SETSUBUN has a very powerful power to make outdoors dangerous.
There is a rumor that says 'Throwing NATTO(Nutritious fermented soybeans with strong smell.) on SETSUBUN can be a charm against demons through one year,' but no one is sure about it.
