Togetsu-kyo Bridge
(Arashiyama area)
(June 19, 1997)

Togetsu-kyo Bridge spans Katura-gawa river in Arashiyama, western part of Kyoto.
The first bridge spanned there was built more than 800 years ago, and todays one was built in 1934. All the bridges span there have been called Togetsu-kyo for these 700 years, since a retired emperor Kameyama-joko(1249-1305) commented on the shape of a bridge there,
'It looks like the way of the moon passing over the sky!'
After that, the bridges span there came to be called 'Togetsu-kyo' which means' the bridge looks like the way of the moon passing over the sky.'
But somebody told an incorrect story to the moon.
The moon thought that 'Togetsu-kyo' means 'the bridge over which the moon should pass' and put it into practice one day morning in early June. The bellow is the photo of the scene.

How cheerful the moon is !

Key Word

Modern Japanese Style

Togetsu-kyo bridge is 5 minutes walk from Arashiyama Station of Keifuku Railway.
Though it's in the popular tourist resort Sagano-Arashiyama and there are a lot of tourist attractions, I am afraid that the 5 minutes' way will make you disappointed for its Modern Japanese Style, in other word, Disneyland Style.
But the 5 minutes' way is not the all of the area. I hope you have a little bit patience.
