Japanese Language Programs
The Japanese Language Programs offer three thirteen-week terms a year. Each course consists of three two-hour classes and is divided into three main levels: Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced, and subdivided depending on the needs of the students. The student's level is determined through a placement test and interview. Private lessons are also available. The subject and procedure will be determined by the individual's needs.
Basic Level
The Basic Level is designed to give the student a firm grasp of basic Japanese grammar patterns, particularly in speaking situations. Also, the Japanese syllabic writing systems and simple Chinese characters are introduced to begin an exposure to reading and writing. Students will be expected to read the grammar notes and patterns practices before each class.
Intermediate Level
The Intermediate Level is designed to extend over a three-semester period. It is directed toward encouraging the student to use basic patterns and vocabulary. In addition, we strive to get the student to try to think in complete thoughts rather than separate fragmented sentences. This course will introduce more complex and idiomatic grammar patterns. Situational usage and practice will be emphasized. In addition to pattern practices, reading materials are used to increase the student's reading comprehension ability and kanji retention. The goal of the Intermediate Level is to begin thinking in complete thoughts and learning to try to express them in writing and speaking.
Advanced Program
The Advanced Program is designed for two terms and is a preparation course for students wanting to begin further research involving either oral communication or reading materials. This course is divided into two subjects. Four hours is devoted to an advanced study of the spoken language. In the remaining two hours the class reads essays, newspaper and magazine articles and short stories by modern authors. The student's aim is to interpret each work as a whole and express his/her own ideas in writing and discussion.
