JAPAN URBAN DESIGN INSTITUTEiJUDIj
THE OBJECTIVE OF THE ORGANIZATION
In recent years, there has been a notable movement towards the creation of attractive urban spaces. Many public and private organizations are active in designing urban environmental elements such as roads, parks, plazas, bridges, river-sides, public architecture, collective housing, commercial facilities, environmental sculpture, signs and paying attention to color and lighting, etc.
However, these efforts do not necessarily culminate in harmonious results nor are they always cohesive to the specific character and historical context of the place.
Today, fundamental questions are raised as to what the city is, or urban environment should be like, and hence effective solutions regarding design of spatial structures in the city are expected from the urban design point of view.
Various individual efforts have been made in attempts to respond to this emerging situation but over-all achievement is not up to desirable standards.
Therefore, it has been recognized that professionals who are involved in various aspects of urban environment need to gather together to establish an organization which can facilitate net-working and enable a comprehensive approach to be taken towards creation of better urban spaces.
Japan Urban Desing Institute(JUDI) was established in May 1991 in response to the recognition of these needs, felt by people involved in various fields concerning the urban environment, national and local governments, universities, consultants, enterprises, so forth.
This new organization aims at connecting the above mentioned bodies literally, and facilitate the exchange of opinions and information, and moreover to generate new knowleldge and information, to raise the professional and technical quality of members. The ultimate purpose is to make society as a whole recognize to importance of urban environmental design, and thus cooperate in contribution to creating urban environment with a higher quality.
