Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) is a rare neoplasm of nerve sheath origin. We report a case of MPNST arising in the mandible with bone destruction.
A 55-year-old man presented with a 3-month history of slowly progressive, painless swelling anterior to his left ear. MRI imaging demonstrated a well-circumscribed mass in the ramus of his mandible with bone destruction. Surgical excision was performed. Immunohistochemically, the tumor cells were stained for S-100, leading to a diagnosis of MPNST arising from the trigeminal nerve. A total dose of 60 Gy radiation was delivered postoperatively. There has been no evidence of recurrence 9 months postoperatively. Because MPNST often recur and metastasize after surgical excision, careful follow-up over a prolonged period is important.
