Mysterious MONSTER named 'OTHERS'
Where do you go, HIGH-TECH JAPAN? (2)

(April 23, 1996. Revised in April 17, 1997)

Niwa and Shibata found themselves sitting in the canal. Buttocks and legs were wet. Not injured.
A crowd was looking down them anxiously from the bridge or the lane.
The two looked around, but could not find that monster.

Niwa and Shibata dashed into a Police Box, and told a policeman what has happened to them. But a policeman did not believe them. He only remembered an ancient tradition, 'People in fancy appear in spring.'

But on the same day, other 10 people suffered the same way as Niwa and Shibata, and 34 people witnessed the monster. On the next day, 16 became victims and 51 became eyewitnesses of the monster.

The monster story became the talk of Kyoto, and the monster was named 'OTHERS' after what it said. Philosophers' Lane got much more crowded day by day, by a mob eager to see OTHERS. The OTHERS' BOOM!

Some souvenir stores tried to make a profit of this boom. They began to produce OTHERS merchandise, and began lending or selling wet suits, rainwears and rubber Boots to potential victims, saying 'Providing is preventing.' Proprietors of Sentou (Japanese bathhouses) prepared drying machines and dressing rooms for victims.

At the same time, a vigilante corps was organaized by the neighbors and some souvenir stores to rid of the monster and to get back elegance and serenity of the lane.
But they were no match for OTHERS, only to become victims.
As the weekend nears, cherry started flowering, and the vigilantes became depressed more and more. 'Do we have to spend this cherry season in such a noisy OTHERS' BOOM? That's no elegant!'

It is on the occasion that a pilgrim Buddhist priest whose name was Ikkyuu (means first class. Differ from cartoon character 'Ikkyuu-san' whose name means 'a short rest or breather') came to the vigilante corps and said,
'I can exorcise the monster.'
Then this tall and sturdy man around 50 years old became the last hope for an elegant weekend.
