OHAGI and BOTAMOCHI
(September 17, 1998)

OHIGAN is Buddhist services performed during the equinoctial week.
This year, OHIGAN will be held from September 20 to 26.
In OHIGAN, we eat OHAGI, a rice ball coated with sweetened red beans, soybean flour, or sesame and salt. I like OHAGI very much.

OHAGI has another name, BOTA-MOCHI.
Both are named after its outside appearance that is similar to blooming of Hagi (a Japanese bush clover) and Botan (a tree peony).
That is, Hagi to OHAGI, and Botan to BOTAMOCHI.

This is an OHAGI.
Does it really look like blooming of HAGI and Botan?
I don't think so.

As Botans bloom in late spring and early summer, in OHIGAN of spring, we call the rice ball BOTAMOCHI.
As HAGIs bloom in autumn, in OHIGAN of autumn, we call it OHAGI.
How complicated!!
