In the case of idiomatic usage, the meaning of an idiom cannot be worked out from its separate parts through a knowledge of grammar and vocabulary since it has to be understood as a complete unit. The meaning of an idiom, however, is always fixed so when a student has understood it, the problem is solved once and for all. |
Stimu-Con Usage Games - through use of a picture-word format - can demonstrate idiomatic usage more effectively. Students play a variety of roles and imitate the recorded conversational exchanges of Americans in a number of conversational settings. In doing so, they learn not only what to say but also how to say it, and thus are able to simulate an "experience" similar to a native speaker's and catch a feeling for American idiomatic usage. |
