Athough applied linguists emphasize the need
to teach learners the importance of usage, again by acknowledging
a words-only or a words-and-pictures format (to the exclusion
of a picture-word format) in academic and status-conscious journals,
the outcome is a complete halt to progress in this intellectual
sphere. Unless, therefore, language teachers and applied linguists
undertake a critique of all three types of formats and become
aware of the strengths and weaknesses of each, problems such
as how to teach socially appropriate language and other similar
problems will not be amenable to a solution. |
